Caritas Ile Maurice is a non-government organisation and its mission is to witness God's Love
while working for the overall promotion of the human being, social justice and solidarity among all with priority attention
to the poor and most deprived members of society.
The activities of Caritas Ile Maurice are part of the social pastoral care of the Church and comprise the following three
spheres:
- Emergencies, peace and reconciliation;
- Partnership building;
- Development and wealth creation.
Caritas Ile Maurice was founded in March 1966 following an initiative of Gustave Rey, who then defined Caritas as
"an organisation where Charity is both commitment and capacity".
The NGO first focussed on emergency situations because, during the period that followed independance, many families
were facing situations of distress while the country was going through an acute unemployment crisis with all sorts of
calamities.
Caritas Ile Maurice was registered in 1970 with the Registrar of Associations.
Inspired by Pope Paul VI Encyclical "Populorum Progressio" (1967) inviting all charitable and social organisations
of the Catholic Church to engage in developmental activities to combat poverty, Caritas Ile Maurice decided in May 1993 to
modify its orientation and to engage towards social pastoral care in the diocese.
In 2001, following the Diocesan Synod, Preferential option for the Poor has become a priority for the diocese. Thus, to-day,
Caritas Ile Maurice with the help of its various projects, aims at rehabilitating the poor so that
they may regain their dignity and build together a strong and equitable community.
